OBITUARY.
O’BRIEN
This community was shocked to hear of the sad and sudden death of John H. O’Brien of Maple Leaf, of apoplexy which occurred at his home last Wednesday, April 25, 1917. He had been about his work as usual all day and after coming in and preparing for supper he complained of a headache, and almost immediately growing worse. Medical aid was summoned but though all efforts were made to relieve him, in fifteen minutes he passed away.
John O’Brien was born in Howard county, Ia., Jan. 28, 1878. He was the son of John and Catherine O’Brien. Here he grew to manhood, gathering around him many friends whom he always greeted with a kind word and genial smile. He was honest, upright and industrious.
On Nov. 18, 1902, he was united in marriage to Mary McGruder of Lourdes. To his union were born six children, Johnnie, Owen, Clayton, Marie, Charles and Raphael. Besides his sorrowing wife and six small children he leaves to mourn, his father, mother, five brothers and three sisters, William, Thomas, Joseph, Charles, Davis, Mrs. Mary E. McIntee of Eden Valley, Minn., Mrs. Elizabeth McIntee of Paynesville, Minn., and Bernetta, all of whom were present at the funeral, besides many relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church of which the deceased was a faithful member, conducted by Rev. Father Norris, who gave a most beautiful and touching sermon which will never be forgotten by whose who were there.
The pall bearers were his cousins, Patrick Enright, Willie Clancy, Frankie Dinger, John Clancy, Francis Clancy, John E. Enright.
The funeral was among the largest that was ever held in Lourdes, over one hundred teams following his remains, showing the high esteem they held for their friend and neighbor.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Owen McGruder and Edward McGruder of Medina, N. D., Mrs. Archie Oglive of Jamestown, N. E., Wm. J. O’Brien, Minneapolis, Minn., and Bernard McGruder and Frank McGruder of Lawler, Iowa.
